Gautham Karthik is living in Burma with his two friends and comes to Chennai in hopes of a job. They befriend a person, who introduces them to pawn broker Siddique and join for small odd jobs in his shop. Siddique takes a liking to Gautham after witnessing him being quite proficient in his work. He also manages to save his daughter from a problem. Likewise, Gautham saves Siddique too from a life-threatening situation. As a result, the bond between them grows substantially.
In the meantime, it is love at first sight for Gautham after he sees Sana Makbul. Although she rejects his romantic pursuits in the beginning, she too begins falling for him after witnessing his kind gestures for his peers and other people. At this point, Gautham, who is struggling to make ends meet in life gets a suggestion from Siddqiue to get into gold smuggling as it will bring him more money.
In the beginning, he takes up small smuggling assignments, but runs into trouble when there is constant police interference. He decides to take up one big gold smuggling job and get settled once and for all. He then smuggles a lot of gold into Burma and gets his money. Upon his return, Gautham and his friends lose their money. They then begin to ponder anxiously what to do after losing the money. The rest of the plot of Rangoon revolves around where all that money went, who took the money and whether they are able to retrieve it all back.
Gautham Karthik has done an extremely good job and has transformed himself appearance-wise for his role in the film. Be it the local slang or the torn and dirty attire, he nails it right. His friends in the film too have come good and deliver satisfactory performances. Despite being her debut film, Sana Makbul has handled her role with maturity and comes off as charming especially in the romantic sequences. Veteran Malayalam actor Siddique has once again brought in his experience into play and performed his role with ease.
Director Rajkumar Periasamy has attempted to make a film that shows how youths get into big trouble by involving themselves in gold smuggling. He has shot the film in some of the best locations and has extracted work from every artist. Anish Tharun Kumar's cinematography skills come to the fore and he has shot Rangoon in a beautiful manner. Vishal's Chandrasekhar's background score is top notch while RH Vikram's songs are enjoyable. The stunt choreographer duo Anbariv have designed few exceptional fight sequences.
In short, Rangoon is worth watching!
