Vettrii and Soundara Raja deliver vegetables in markets and there is often a tight competition over this. Vettrii works for his father's elder brother Aadukalam Naren's truck as a driver while Soundara Raja owns his own vehicle. In the midst of this, it is love at first sight for Vettrii when he see Soundara Raja's sister Aadithi Krishna. However, when he comes to know she is Soundara Raja's sister, he stops pursuing her. After a point of time, Vettrii and Aadithi get involved in a conflict, but gradually love blossoms between the two.
In the meantime, there has been a feud for a long time between Motta Rajendran and Soundara Raja. Keeping their conflict in mind, Rajendran damages Soundara Raja's van. Soundara Raja however comes to the judgment that this is the work of Vettrii and goes after him. Aadukalam Naren coming to know about Soundara Raja's plans sends away Vettrii to another town and hatches a plan to diffuse the problem by fixing an alliance between their families. They then fix a marriage between Vettrii and Aadithi in the hopes of solving the tension between the two families. The rest of the plot of Thangaratham follows how Vettrii reacts to this decision and how the enmity between him and Soundara Raja turns out.
Vettrii has been seen in few films before in small roles and this is a bigger role this time. He needs to be complimented for taking a serious effort for paying attention to get his acting right. Aadithi charms us with her beauty and has played her part well. Aadukalam Naren brings in his experience and carries off his role with ease. Mottai Rajendran's act is once again enjoyable.
Director Balamurugan has made a film in the backdrop of a village and has attempted to tell a story with love, sentiment, action and comedy. However, too many flashbacks are a deterrent to the progress of the story. Tony Britto's music as well as his background score are average. Jacob Rathinaraj's cinematography skills come to the fore and he has shot the film well.
In short, Thangaratham doesn't shimmer.
